In honour of the Wise Woman that you are, Julie. I truly value each word you write/wrote about the liminal spaces, and how in the opposites there is that space in between, and how in the polarities there is also profound peace and connection.

So many words of wisdom you wrote here - this is my favourite...

'Trust the unfolding. Let it shape you. Let it teach you. Show up, even when it feels raw and tender. Write anyway. This journey will ask everything of you…but it will offer even more in return." This feels so strong at the moment. To trust the unfolding and to let it shape and teach me. Your words invite depth, they invite honesty, they invite a raw invitation to come and be REAL. That to me is your great gift...through your story, your words, your poetry, through your journal prompts and your mandalas you invite us to step away from the numbers, the statistics, the "need to do it in this way or that" and you invite us to be REAL. You invite us to be honest as we step into our own inner sovereign.

Yes, it could be about the numbers, about the "right way to do things", about figures and places on the leader-board, yet what you offer is deeper, more grounded, more authentic.

My dear friend, Thank you. Thank you for pushing the edges and for inviting us all to step into those magical places too.

I am so honoured to have met you here in the liminal.

Ahhh thank you dear liminal friend! And yes, that last question that Magdalena offered was so powerful for me and it came out truly channeled. Me to Me! The deep soul me answered that question. And I loved hearing it!

And I love that you included the mandalas! I haven't done one in such a long time. I have missed doing them. But I created one last night and I love it. Will share soon.

And thanks for bringing the numbers into this, for I'm truly a numbers person! I literally almost majored in Mathematics in College. I love numbers, formulas, geometry, calculus! AND that is the area of my life where I have to be watchful. Not making the way numbers are presented about my self-worth. This is where I say my sacred NO! or as Prajna said in a comment here, "telling the algorithms to F**k off." Being gentler with myself around this.

Thanks again Sam for your beautiful words here, I am so deeply touched. 💜💜💜

What an inspiring interview! I loved hearing the origin story of Julie's foray into writing. Julie, I can't imagine you *not* writing! I first met you as a poet here, and for months had no idea you wrote such a powerhouse of a Substack. I've learned so much from your experience and insights, and about such a wide range of spiritual things, and I look forward each week to seeing your name land in my in-box. And now in this interview, I've learned more still. Thanks to both of you for such a powerful, collaborative conversation. 🙏✨💖

Thanks, Keith! Yes, you were one of the first people I met here on Substack! I started in May, and Kaitlin's, "A Poem a Day in the Month of May" was one of my first experiences of community that Substack fosters. Your poetry caught my eye right away; I was so deeply moved by your authenticity and prose. And I feel the same way about finding your Substack... I absolutely love - love your style of writing. I always come away feeling more informed, deeply touched and either laughing or crying, usually both!

And I appreciate your reading this interview and thanks for your beautiful reflections. 💜💜💜

A wonderful essay from my dear friend. Julie is a model truth teller and wise woman who tenderly pushes the edges. So many potent nuggets—writing as a living inquiry, facing ourselves, trusting the unfolding, and showing up even when raw and tender. I loved the reframing of the liminal—not as a void, but a place where opposites don’t battle, they weave wound and wisdom. This gem: letting go of any need to placate deepens true connection and tells the algorithms to F**k off. And her bonus content! Moving insight into the body to integrate it as lived reality. Showing up with integrity and heart. Yes, yes, yes. So good. Thank you!

"The closest Substack category that fits what I offer is Faith and Spirituality. But what I write about pushes the edges culturally, politically, and religiously. Every piece I publish carries an element of risk."

Exactly! The categories dissolve and become meaningless. It's all about love and our willingness to follow the inner promptings.

I love the idea of inner promptings and following them as we create and write!

Julie Schmidt's avatar

Agree Susan! The inner promptings are the main way for me. When I get in my head I want to direct, categorize and control the writing. But the inner guidance always shows me where I need to go, what I need to write and how to present it. There is more a listening and a flow. And as you said that takes my love and willingness, which is a kind of practice, but truly more a surrender. 💜💜💜

Thanks, Erica! I loved these questions that Magdalena provided. They were deep and prompted me to go deep as well. And I agree, "writing from the edges" is the perfect way to describe how I write (thanks Magdalena). For I'm right there at the threshold, resting in the liminal.

Was also great to connect with you Erica! Glad we were able to do that so spontaneously. 💜💜💜

My dearest Julie, this whole interview feels like a sacred transmission! 💖💖 Your phrase “writing without armor” really resonated in me. There’s such clarity and devotion in the way you speak about truth-telling.

I’m especially moved by how you describe writing from the liminal as a weaving of wounds and wisdom. Just wow. That feels like the truest kind of map: a way of walking that honors mystery, contradiction, and transformation.

Thank you for this generous, soul-bared glimpse into your journey. You model a kind of integrity that makes space for others to exhale and begin again. I feel so grateful to witness your unfolding. And I feel so inspired to polish off what has become some pretty rough edges of my own relationship with substack. Love you! 😘

A wonderful essay. Julie truly does push the edges. Some nuggets of many that I received reading this necessary voice, Writing as a Living Inquiry! Facing ourselves, trust the unfolding, showing up even when raw and tender. The liminal-unknown, not as a void, opposites exist, not to pivot against each other, to weave our wisdom and wounds as one. My favoorite: letting go of any need to placate, deepens true connection and tells the algorithms to F off. And her bonus content: to move insight inot the body, to integrate as a lived reality. To show up with integrity and heart.

Just the essay I needed to read as I put pen to paper to write about feeling unmothered, a year after my mother's death, and how I feel closer to her now than when she was alive. It feels risky but necessary.
