Hello Magdalena! Yesterday I did something uncharacteristic. I wrote away from home. I took a small notebook and my favorite pen and started to write in the doctor's office. First in the waiting room and then in the exam room. The doctor was late, and I was writing like my pen was on fire! I closed my notebook before I shook his hand. I was in the flow. I have not read what I wrote yet, but it helped me so much. So, no matter what, I will be writing away from home as often as I can!
Dear Rosemarie: I'm loving this! I have not thought about doctor's office - so thank you for that idea! I'm going to see one tomorrow - so stay tuned for my experiment/results! I'm super curious what shows up b/c I really, really dislike going to doc offices (lol) - with all due respect for all the amazing medical professionals on here !
I read this after spending all day fighting through my block. I have a really bad tendency to reread and correct my writing before I even start so this was a great piece of advice!
Like you, /I set up my pen and paper and just gaze into the lines.
Loved reading this. The routine of getting into flow has always been a struggle for me. I tend to give into resistance more often than not. I'm trying hard these days to push through and remember how good it always feels when I'm done. This is a great reminder with great guidance. Thank you!
I love this so much because the light bulb just went off for me. Thank you for breaking this down and making it make sense. There are environments I have to be in that I just cannot bring myself to write in. I have the time there but my brain absolutely refuses to let down its guard. Even while writing this about that environment I noticed my whole body tensing! I will be definitely be following your guidance.
Dear LaDawn: I'm so excited that a light bulb went off for you! These are my all time favorite moments! Can't wait to hear/read more about your results! Keep my posted!
The cold coffee is apparently not evidence that the writing ritual has failed, it may actually be proof that it worked. I love the unfinished sentence idea, although my inner editor is already pacing nervously and demanding closure. Perhaps leaving her mildly irritated overnight is part of the ritual too...
Dear Tatiani: thank you so much for your kind words! You might be absolutely correct that cold coffee might be an evidence that it worked! (lol). I can't wait to hear how the unfinished sentence work(ed) for you! M
I really enjoyed your article. I journal every morning on my porch with my first class of lemon water and the pups. It’s a brain dump, I monitor nothing. I’ve never heard the idea of leaving your last sentence not finished but I’m interested in trying. Thank you.
Dear Candy: I'm so happy that it resonated with you! Your morning ritual sounds so amazing! I love the idea of porch, pups and lemons! I'm super curious how it will work for you! Hope you share with me and readers!
I am so specific about the type of pen that I use and the type of notebook that I use. It has to be the right type of paper and that paper has to match the flow of the pen. Otherwise, all I can focus on is how uncomfortable or slippery the combination between the paper and the pan is. I also can’t be interrupted. You would think that would be an obvious one, but most people who don’t do things like this. Don’t take them serious so you can sit about it with people all you want, but if they don’t take you seriously it’s hard to do
